Washindi is a Swahili word which means winners. The group comprises of 6 women who live in a small village near Kikuyu town, approximately 30 Kilometers from Nairobi City. The group was formed over 10 years ago and they have been engaging in various projects to generate income in order to educate their children and meet other personal needs. Over the years, the group has been engaging in table banking, a traditional model which women help each other by contributing money to help members whenever they hold their monthly meeting.
As years evolved, they realized they can do more as a group and they decided to start a small bakery baking bread to supply to nearby schools. Currently, their sale is about $13 per day translating to $260 per month since they only supply from Monday to Friday. The group also makes mats, handbags, decorative accessories, table mats and crotchet works. They supply their items to nearby towns and their marketing is mainly by way of referrals. On a good month, they can generate income of upto $400
The group needs financing in order to scale up their operations. In their bakery business, they need to purchase an oven in order to start baking cup cakes to supply to nearby shops and even to local supermarkets in their neighborhood. They also need to increase the quantity of bread they bake in order to meet the ever increasing demand. The group also needs to expand the other line of Art work to meet the increasing demand.
The materials used to make their items are quite expensive and therefore they are forced to sell all the items they make in order to get capital to make others. They believe that if they get a substantial amount of capital, they will be able to meet their customer needs without having any delay. They also intend to purchase one sewing machine in order to eliminate the cost incurred to purchase some of the items.
In order to increase their income streams, the group intends to venture in Agri-business when they accumulate enough capital base. Most of them have small portions of land that can allow them set up green houses.
