Timothy Gitau Kariuki is a multifaceted farmer and a very vibrant business man in Kitale’s Makutano region. He is a well-known butcher at Makutano center having been in the beef and mutton business for the last twelve years. The father of four has seen all his children through school from proceeds of the butchery and the agribusiness that he started to practice way before he set up the butchery.
Having watched his own parents work tirelessly on the farm season after season to sell the yields so that they could afford to take him and his siblings through school as well as provide for their daily needs, Timothy experienced first-hand the profitability of agribusiness and how it could change people’s lives. His passion for farming was born at a very tender age while growing up in rural Makutano in Kitale as he sought to practice and learn as much as possible while helping his parents during school holiday breaks over the years.
He practices crop rotation on the five acres of land that he has hired for farming to be able to retain the soil quality which assures him of healthy and abundant yield every harvest. Moto Hope Micro Lending’s first loan of $400 enabled him to open a second butchery at Makutano center and scale his butchery business creating employment for one more person. He has created employment for two young men working in his two butcheries and creates more employment for at least ten people every planting, weeding and harvesting season.
Timothy is seeking $400 from Moto Hope Micro Lending to facilitate a smooth harvesting period at his five acres maize farm as well as boost business at his two butcheries. The money will enable him to pay for the labor that he will need at the farm, as well as purchase enough actellic powder to dust the maize grains with to control weevils and moths, and buy air tight storage bags which suffocate any form of pests to store his yield while awaiting to make sales to wholesalers and brokers. Some of the funds will be used to buy more beef and mutton for his two butcheries during the festive season which is marked by a lot of festivities that raise the demand for meat in the market. He foresees a good time for business.
