Kitale in Trans Nzoia County is largely an agricultural region serving as one of the bread baskets of the country. Farming and agribusiness are the most common economic activities across the county. This phenomenon has not been lost on entrepreneurs who seek to reap from the farmers while aiding their agricultural activities and ventures. Stephen Nduati is one such entrepreneur. He set up shop in Kitale’s Makutano area five years ago and has many farmers dancing to his tune since he opened the doors of his agrovet.
The agrovet is stocked with the best quality packets of seeds, fertilizer and farm equipment, among other supplies which sit pretty on the shelves of the shop waiting for customers. He spends a substantial amount to get the genuine and best quality products from renown suppliers because he knows what his customers want to enable them optimize yield. Being a farmer himself, he is fully aware of what the farmers need to grow the maize, tea and vegetables that are the main crops grown in the region.
He and his wife help each other run the shop which is also used to charge car batteries, another gap that he is glad he filled in the market at the center for it also brings in something albeit little compared to the agrovet earnings. In addition, he bought a motorbike which has created employment for one young man who operates motorbike taxi service popularly known as bodaboda operators who brings in at least $72 monthly. These ventures enable them to cater for the needs of their young family of one child; still a toddler.
He is seeking $250 from Moto Hope Micro Lending to boost stock at the agrovet. The farmers are in a busy planting and weeding season and the demand for seeds, fertilizer, pesticides among other supplies is very high. The funds will enable him to satisfy all the prevailing demand.
