It takes a while to know that Lucy’s husband is hard of hearing and that the gesticulation Lucy keeps using is to sign for him. The two form such a remarkable team practicing their various farming ventures in Kahuho area of Kitale.
Lucy has for over four years practiced agribusiness with the help of her husband to enable her fend for their close knit family of two school going children. From the sale of their produce, they are able to also afford the school fees of their children as well as cater for their basic needs.
She has specialized in horticultural farming growing green leafy vegetables and tomatoes as well as large scale maize farming. This season she has planted maize on three acres of land. During the harvesting season, Lucy provides ready market for her neighbors and small scale maize farmers who she buys from to eventually combine with her own harvest and sale on wholesale basis to large scale traders in Kitale town.
She also owns one cow which she bought with her first loan of $500 from Moto Hope Micro-Lending. She is seeking a second loan of $600 to buy another dairy cow. She would like to start selling milk come next year(2019) to be able to add to her earnings to fully meet all of her family’s needs.
The additional cow will provide more milk together with that which she is currently milking to enable her have enough supply for her customers. Proceeds from the sale of the milk she says will also be used to facilitate her loan repayment for the terms of payment are flexible and affordable.
