Business: Cereals
Location: Kitale
Years in Operation: 10 Years
Amount Needed: $1,500

Mathenge deals with the business of buying and selling of Maize in Kitale. He has been in this business for close to 10 years. Kitale is the food basket of the country and there are many farmers who grow maize in large scale. Farmers normally plant maize in April and they start harvesting in November. Price for maize tends to be lower during the harvesting period hence this is the time that Mathenge buys the maize in plenty and store them for a while in order to fetch good prices.

He supplies the maize to as far as Lodwar, a town north of Kitale bordering Ethiopia on the South. The northern region is usually dry and they hardly grow crops due to lack of rains hence they depend on supplies from Kitale. Mathenge’s business comes in handy to farmers in the region as he provides market for their produce.

Financing Need

Mathenge needs $1,500 in order to build his own store and be able to purchase more bags of maize. Currently, he is paying rent for the store where he stores his maize and he believes his operating cost will reduce significantly if he constructs his own store. He intends to scale up his business to be able to supply to maize milers in Kitale town, to do this he will need to have good capital to be able to buy maize throughout the year.
