John Mureithi Ndung’u is all too well known in Kitale’s Makutano area for his maize trade. He has sold maize for the last five years and knows no other economic activity, he says. He is also a large scale maize farmer and sells his harvest as well.
The astute business man buys maize from other traders especially the small scale ones during the harvesting period when prices are relatively low due to the high supply in the season. He then stores the maize in great condition after treating it to preserve it.
The maize he buys combined with his own harvest, affords him quite the stock when he starts to sell in the dry and off peak seasons when maize supply in the market is low and the prices are very high. Besides selling to other large scale traders and wholesale brokers, he also sells his maize to the Kenya Cereal and Produce Board.
He is seeking $800 from Moto Hope Micro-Lending to be able to purchase more maize to have adequate stock to meet the demand he predicts in the near future. He has created employment for ten people who are able to fend for their own families by working for him.
His family depend on the proceeds from his business. His profits enable him to pay the school fees of his two school going children, the treatment of his ailing wife and his family’s basic needs.
