Jane Wanjiku is a jovial and vibrant middle aged lady who is passionate about cooking and the food business. It is lunch hour when I arrive at her business and she is busy joyfully tending to her customers. The little premise that hosts her business has three small benches and one table and the furthest corner serves as the kitchen. She makes her delicacies in full view of the hungry customers who await their orders to be served to them. She makes simple meals and stews that are very affordable for the low income earning customers that frequent her eatery.
Her food kiosk is strategically located along the busy Molo Olenguruone road at the Peace matatu park where there is a lot of human traffic of motorbike (bodaboda) operators, travelers, drivers as well as other small holder business people especially hawkers. Most of them prefer to eat at her food kiosk or buy take a way dishes from her. A full meal goes for as low as $0.3 which is affordable for most of the regular customers. Some of her customers are very rowdy and impatient but she is able to calmly and with a smile on her face put her house in order and have everyone eating happily.
She has been in this business for three years now and knows most of her customers by name. This in turn makes them feel appreciated and valued. She is able to cater for the needs of her six children and also educate them. She is seeking $100 from Moto Hope Micro Lending to buy dry food stuff and ingredients in bulk as well as give her little kiosk a face lift. She would like to add varieties to her menu and also improve the quality of food she serves for she is now targeting shop owners and other office workers around Molo’s Keep Left Bus Park where she can make deliveries to their business premises/offices.
