Mrs. Harriet Ndunge is a senior nurse about to retire, who is passionate about serving her community. She has worked at the Molo District hospital for the longest period of her career and her passion and entrepreneurial spirit have led her to set up a Chemist at the entry of Molo Market to continue being useful even after retirement while at the same time keep being financially independent.
Her entrepreneurial journey began with a small scale retail shop in which she sold fast moving household goods. With time, she set up an MPESA Agency to complement her shop. She created employment for the shopkeeper that tended to her clients while she worked at the hospital. The hardworking single mother of two grown children is a also a small holder strawberry and poultry farmer. The proceeds from her shop and farm, as well as earnings from her nursing job are what have seen her children through school as well as provide for all of her family’s needs.
MHML loaned her $300 at a time when she needed more capital to be able to shift from her retail shop business to the chemist she now owns. Her love for healthcare provision inspired her business shift towards something she was more passionate about. Something that would bring her fulfillment. She encounters many patients with no financial capability to pay for healthcare in hospital for minor ailments and seeks to be of help. The small scale Chemist has proved to be of essential value to the low income earning women and their children that buy medicine from her facility. She is also able to offer them care when she is off work.
She has provided employment for a qualified and licensed pharmacist who runs the facility and this has earned her premise trust and loyalty from her clients. The chemist opens very early and closes late to be able to cater for as many people as need be. Despite providing affordable drugs and minor clinical services, the returns have enabled her to continue to stock well and meet many of her patients’ prescriptions. She also attributes a lot of her success to God’s help for she is a staunch christian who believes in the power of prayer. Her clients view her as a caring mother with a healing touch!
Harriet’s future goal and aspiration is to transform her chemist into a fully fledged clinic once she retires from government employment, to continue serving her community!
