Everlyne is a household name in Kitale’s Soko Mjinga’s Fish market . Traders and buyers alike know her and have good things to say about her business. She has been selling fish for the last 25 years and the advantage of time clearly shows in the way her stand is busy with activity. She has traveled to Lodwar for all of these years to buy the fish public service operators who ply the route are familiar with her trade and are always eager to provide the means of transporting her fish stock whenever she travels to purchase it. She has specific suppliers from whom she buys. Her seller understand her specifications clearly and always meet her demand making sure she has the freshest fish in all the sizes she demands.
She has specialized in selling Tilapia her fish of choice. At the beginning she sold the fish fresh and raw but realized the quick perishability of the fish was causing her huge losses especially during the low demand seasons. She now sells deep fried fish which for as long as she buys in the freshest state is able to clear stock before any goes stale. She has studied her market and brings in stock depending on the demand of the time so that she is able to maximize profits through high sales.
This trade she is happy has enabled her to raise her five grown children and take them through school. They are now all independent and she continues to engage in it to meet her daily needs. Besides, she says, she does not know how to do any other trade or economic activity. Fish mongering is her forte; her passion. It keeps her busy while providing for her as she would be lonely and miserable all alone at home for she is a widow, she calmly explains.
She is seeking $200 to bring in more stock for her business. Demand is about to go higher than it has been in the past two months for the school going children will be returning home for the two months November December Holidays and consumption in the households she serves will definitely rise. She is very optimistic about the remaining months of the year!
